Some will say that embarrassment is a situation which comes to teach you something about yourself. It is like a wakeup call that lets you know that you need to reorganize your system.
Recently I came back form a 5 day trip to New York. I went to see the Stationary and Surtex Shows. I took my business cards (Just in case of an opportunity knocking on my door) and put it in my bag. The opportunity came when I met an agent that wanted to exchange business cards. He gave me his business card in a matter of seconds when I told him “just a second, let me find my cards. Gee, where is it?” I needed to take everything out. That meant (Among other) the following items;
1. Clean Kleenex
2. Not so clean Kleenex
3. Sanitizer
4. Ripped paper with directions on it
5. Gum
6. Water bottle
7. Always
8. Opened chocolate
9. Unopened peanuts
10. A zip lock bag with Band Aid, Tylenol, Benadryl, Chopsticks, Refresh, (you name it, it's there)
11. Dental floss
12. A Statue of Liberty eraser (A really cool one)
13. Used metro card
14. Wallet for paper money and credit cards.
15. Japanese wallet for coins.
16. Camera
17. Small phone book with no one in NYC that can help me out.
18. Small notepad
19. Pen, markers and bubble wrap (jut in case of a nerves brake down)
And finally at the bottom of the pile, my business card box…which was empty. I forgot my cards in the hotel room.
The moral of the story is: There are many things your smile can buy. Taking your business cards to a conference……priceless!
